On Technology…The Life and Times of Jay-Z on Tumblr

5 Apr

“I don’t surf the net. No, I’ve never been on myspace. Too busy letting my voice vibrate.” Jay-Z Beach Chair

I guess those words no longer ring true for Hov because yesterday he launched lifeandtimes.com in conjunction with tumblr. His new lifestyle site covers music, sports, art and design, and technology. The site is based on Jay-Z’s interests and inspirations. You simply click one of the picture icons and it takes you to the story.

On Fashion…Tribal Teyana Taylor for Vibe

4 Apr

I think I’ve mentioned it here before, but Teyana Taylor is one of my favorite style icons. She kills every photo shoot, whether she’s rocking J’s or a white tee. This time she is modeling various ethnic and tribal prints for a spread in Vibe Magazine. The pieces are African, Indian, and Lebanese inspired.

Even before I lived in South Africa, I loved tribal prints. I have several signature pieces in my closet that I wear every now and then. It’s funny because most of the people in SA –at least where I lived–rarely wore African print. The average person wore European and American style clothes (i.e. jeans and t-shirts).

Nevertheless, TT looks amazing in this shoot. ♥

On Writing…

3 Apr

The writer has to take the most used, most familiar objects — nouns, pronouns, verbs, adverbs — ball them together and make them bounce, turn them a certain way and make people get into a romantic mood; and another way, into a bellicose mood. I’m most happy to be a writer.

On Comedy…The Real Housewives of Civil Rights

18 Feb

I stumbled across this video the other day. The ladies of Elite Delta Force 3 comedy troop, along with Wayne Brady, made a short spoof of The Real Housewives. The skit featured none other than Coretta Scott-King, Betty Shabazz, and Rosa Parks as the main characters. While I’m sure there are people who will not find this funny, I thought it was cute for the sake of comedy.

Check it..check it out…

On Music…The Breakup Song Video

9 Feb

I have to admit I got hip to Wale a little late in the game. J to the M put me on to him during the summer and I instantly fell in love with his mix tape More About Nothing. I had never heard a mix tape so thoroughly constructed. So raw in emotion. So poetic and real. At times I felt like I was reading his diary (no homo). Just a quality product. Each song was introduced by a Seinfeld skit that was directly related.

The Breakup Song was one of my favorite songs on the album and now I think the video is just as great. He followed his art imitates art theme and channeled the movie (500) Days of Summer for the video treatment. Good stuff!

On Publishing…Yeezy’s Got a Mouth Full of Diamonds and Money

8 Feb

Please don’t hate me because I love Kanye…lol I feel like I post something about him every other day. But I’m a diehard fan and I can’t help it.

Yeezy has finally put his money where his mouth is or at least the publisher’s of VMan Magazine have. In the lastest issue, which hit stands today,  Yeezy has dollar bills stuffed in his mouth. Well, one in ten of the actual magazines have real dollar bills in the cutout. I feel like I need to go on a quest to find one of those mags.

On Black History…The Love Edition: Barrack and Michelle

8 Feb

The one thing that inspires me the most in life is love. When I was younger I thought that I could live without it. I wrote poems like ” Love Does not Exist”. When the truth is I resented love. My parents have been married for 35 years and the love that they have for each other is sickening. They can’t move without each other. No one can eat if the other isn’t present. They talk to each other on the way home to and from work. And there are many days that I feel like I will never have something like that.

Then I see Barrack and Michelle. For the first time outside of my household, outside of a movie, there’s a real-life black couple deeply in love.  How can I not be inspired by this? The moral support. The PDA that they always show. The great example that they set for their children. I know relationships are hard, especially when you’re the POTUS and FLOTUS. But damn they make it look easy ♥♥♥.

Michelle on Barrack:

“One of the things that attracted me to Barack was his emotional honesty. Right off the bat he said what he felt. There are no games with him—he is who he appears to be. I feel fortunate as a woman to have a husband who loves me and shows me in every way.”(Source)

Barack on Michelle: “Sometimes, when we’re lying together, I look at her and I feel dizzy with the realization that here is another distinct person from me, who has memories, origins, thoughts, feelings that are different from my own. That tension between familiarity and mystery meshes something strong between us. Even if one builds a life together based on trust, attentiveness and mutual support, I think that it’s important that a partner continues to surprise.” (Source)
